Master’s Degree

Our online Master of Science degree is a convenient, flexible way for individuals interested in biological science, insects and other arthropods to strengthen and diversify their knowledge of entomology. Our program empowers students with a comprehensive and customizable master’s degree that state and federal employees, consultants, insect farmers, pest control industry personnel and others who want to further their education can use to advance their positions or kick-start a new career in this growing field.

To personalize your education within the broad field of entomology and nematology, we offer four 30-credit master’s degree specializations:

  • Medical Entomology includes lectures and labs surrounding biting arthropods, the biology of mosquitos and arthropod-borne diseases, and arthropod-related hazards and benefits related to humans, wildlife and other environmental factors and economics.
  • Landscape Pest Management covers identification of landscape pests and their biology, integrating pest management practices into landscape management practices and pest-related hazards and benefits.
  • Urban Pest Management focuses on the principles of insect classification and entomology as they relate to household and structural pests and their biology, integrating pest management practices into building maintenance practices and developing management options for household and structural pests.
  • Beekeeping explores the theory and practice of apiculture, centering on management options essential for protecting honey bees from predators and diseases and running a successful beekeeping business.

You can also take a broad program of study in entomology by completing only the required courses for your master’s degree and completing the remainder of your 30-credit requirement with approved elective courses in entomology and nematology.

Earning a Master’s Degree Online

Tailored for professionals, this program is fully online and can be completed anywhere, at your own pace. There’s no GRE requirement for admission, and students are accepted year-round, so you can enroll at your convenience. Courses are available in the fall, spring and summer semesters.

Each course is made up of modules covering specific entomological topics, supplemented with resources that can include images, animations, case studies, and step-by-step instructions for online laboratory courses and accessing UF library materials and e-journals. Students interact with teaching assistants, course instructors and each other, using private course email, discussion boards and live chat sessions.

Graduate Certificate

In addition to our master’s degree specializations, UF’s Entomology and Nematology Department offers four fully online 15-credit graduate certificates. Students can choose from three different certificate options to personalize their education and focus their studies on a specific area within the entomology and nematology fields.

Graduate Certificate Specializations:

  • Medical Entomology includes lectures and labs in entomology and veterinary topics, mosquito biology and identification.
  • Landscape Pest Management pairs foundational entomology principles with concepts in turf and ornamental entomology.
  • Urban Pest Management focuses on the biology, identification and management of urban pests along with basic principles of entomology.
  • Beekeeping is all about honey bees, their biology, their predators and the theory and practice of apiculture.
